Over 2 years, Europa has been benefiting from the
Royal Society Tomorrow’s Climate Scientists grant. In collaboration with
UCL, Year 5 pupils investigated whether technology could impact littering in schools. Thanks to the grant, Europa was able to acquire a 3D printer as well as micro:bits and other accessories. With this equipment, the children leveraged the curriculum to measure the littering taking place on the school grounds, analyse the data and conduct qualitative interviews to understand the reasons behind the littering. In a second phase, they launched a primary school-wide anti-littering campaign. This project aimed at solving a real-life, local issue using ICT, literacy, mathematics and art. Children ended the project by leading a school assembly to share their learnings and the impact of the campaign. Europa is extremely proud of this project and is investigating how to share and replicate this project with other schools in the country. In March 2025, Europa pupils who participated in this project were invited to present their project at
Parliament. This successful initiative taught the children how to change behaviours and to be agents of change within their community.
