Our very warmest congratulations go to Gabriel who entered the yearly DAAD/ILCS language competition in the Special Category: Secondary School Pupils (Native Speakers) and was selected as the winner of this category. It is brilliant to see Europa UK pupils entering this competition and many thanks go to Frau Irmscher for encouraging her class to take part. The task was ‚to put together the front page of a fictional newspaper in the German-speaking world’. It came with the ‚catch‘ of having to write the final edition of 2024 and selecting ‚the most important stories of a year that has not yet finished‘. Gabriel wrote up the following account of his success and his day at the prize-giving.

‚All winners are invited to London for an entertaining day out. I started the day by getting to know the other eleven winners. Following that, I went into an immersive workshop, where I did an activity related to the subject of my competition entry. This year I wrote a newspaper article, and we did a radio journalism workshop. Last year, I also won with a diary entry. That time, the workshop was a podcast on the subjects that the winners had written about. After the workshop, I went to the Senate House, which is just a short walk from the DAAD office, for the prize giving ceremony. It involved a discussion between some journalism experts. This is also attended by the winners’ parents. At the end of the day, there was a reception with drinks and nibbles. This is also a time to chat to the other winners and the experts‘.
