Did you know that Oxford is home to the most famous sentence in Dutch literature?

On Thursday 13th February, ESUK’s Dutch section went to see it in the University’s Bodleian Library. The sentence was written in the back of a medieval prayer book as a pen trial – a quick scribble to test the sharpness of the writer’s quill. The writer was a Flemish monk, living in eleventh century Rochester. He was most probably reminiscing about his time at home, and this sentence was the first thing that came into his head:

Hebban olla uogala nestas hagunnan hinase hic enda thu uuat unbidan uue nu?

“Have all birds begun nests, except me and you – what are we waiting for?”

The students found it a very interesting experience, and were surprised to see the book in such good condition. Hebban olla vogala is taught and discussed in every Dutch school, so the chance to see it in real life was a special one. The Dutch students were intrigued and asked many insightful questions (their teacher was very impressed!). Our students, being true ambassadors of their Dutch culture, gifted the curator a novel (translated into English) to thank him for his time and hospitality and hopefully spark his interest in Dutch literature.

With thanks to Matthew Holford of the Bodleian Library

On Wednesday most of S4 and 11 S5 students visited the New Theatre in Oxford for a live
presentation from 5 leading scientists from different specialisms, everything from evolution to
studying the moon and stars.

The presenters were: Dr Helen Czerski, who talked about studying the oceans and expanding
our knowledge by collecting data around the globe; Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock based her lecture
around the moon and her fascination with it, while also explaining how the moon came to exist
and what will happen to it in the future; Dr Alice Roberts lectured about ancient bones and how
we can use them to explain animal as well as human evolution, she taught us about how dogs
evolved from wolves and that this started happening at least 15,000 years ago; Professor Lord
Robert Winston talked to us about reproduction and explained his work on pre-implantation
genetic diagnosis, which is used to screen out embryos that would otherwise cause genetic
diseases, allowing families to have babies free of these diseases. Finally Professor Andrea
Sella started with a humble ice cube and challenged us to think about what would happen when
all the ice in the Arctic has melted.

Between these lectures we also had two exam study tips sessions, where an examiner taught
us how to be the most prepared for our exams, including how to formulate answer and how to
answer questions with certain keywords (eg, Explain, Describe)

Thanks to Mrs Down, Dr Coghill, Mrs Keymar and Ms Singer for organizing and accompanying
on this trip.

During the week of the 13th May, half of the S6 students had the opportunity to visit Athens, as part of their culture trip. It was a week full of fantastic Geek food, monuments and language, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Along with the beautiful views, we enjoyed fabulous weather and a swim on the beach.

The children had read the book in class and used it as a basis for some Literacy work. During the assembly they were able to view the original artwork on a large screen and to ask questions about the process of producing the book.

Some children took part in a drama explaining the story.

Year 5 had a similar assembly as they are shortly to visit Christchurch which is closely connected with St Frdeswide.

27th March – 29th March 2019

The Model European Council (MEC) Programme is a yearly political simulation organised by the European Schools. Selected students from each of the 12 schools take on roles as politicians from the 27 member states of the EU, and take part in a 3-day run of council and plenary sessions.

It is an enormous and very complex role-play. The European Commission – with support from the real Commission – prepares the proposals before the summit of the Council. The teams taking on the roles of ministers and heads of state then debate these proposals and decide upon them. The topics on the agenda are always the same issues the EU is currently working on.

This year we were kindly hosted by the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. Our delegates from year S6 represented two countries Hungary (Lily-Mae, Daniel, Carmen, Anna and Molly) and Portugal (Ines, Nathalie, Maya, Saskia and Josephine).

I commend them for their excellent contributions and performance at the conference.
