March 15^th to 19^th, nine of our S6 students joined European Schools to discuss European Current Affairs in the Model European Council. At the closing of the conference, we had the honour of being addressed by President Dr von der Leyen as our keynote speaker. She was warm, kind and loved the interaction with the students.

Championnat d’Europe de Karting-Belgique

Le week-end dernier, j’ai participé à la première manche des championnats d’Europe de karting IAME en Belgique. J’étais le plus jeune pilote là-bas (certains des pilotes étaient plus grands que mon père) et c’était la première fois que je montais dans un kart Junior aussi rapide: on peut dépasser les 80 mph! J’étais rapide aux essais mais j’ai malheureusement eu une grosse chute juste avant la course dans le virage le plus rapide du circuit et je me suis retrouvé au centre médical. Heureusement, j’ai pu utiliser mon français avec les médecins! Les courses proprement dites étaient un peu des montagnes russes mais je me suis retrouvé à la 20e place du championnat (sur 49), ce qui, pour ma première course en Europe, m’a vraiment plu. Prochaine étape en Espagne…

During this last week (15th March – 19th March), nine S6 students participated in a virtual Model European Council (MEC) with other European schools. Europa students represented the governments of Finland and Luxembourg during the MEC. Acting as ministers for these countries, they took part in negotiations on  various matters of concern for the EU. These included homelessness, COVID vaccine nationalism, digital tax, abortion rights, and finding eco-friendly alternatives for transport after the pandemic.

Many political proposals were debated, some were successful and others rejected. Students had to respond to  questions from the press (roles played by other European students).

Europa students were able to learn some valuable skills from this opportunity. The event was a great opportunity to engage in debates and express opinions in a formal situation with clear objectives.

On the final day, all participants had the amazing opportunity to listen to Ursula von der Leyen, the current president of the European Commission.

Gabriele Marcaletti: « Le munuccle a été une expérience vraiment unique, parce qu’il a été en ligne mais aussi parce que c’est une expérience interactive que je recommande a tous pour apprendre à discuter et à comprendre les points de vue des autres ».

Alma Heister Wilhelmsson : “MUN is an event in which you learn to debate and express opinions in a formal manner, representing an assigned country. It helps you build confidence in expressing yourself, whilst meeting new people from various schools around Europe”.

Damien Bielski : “It was enjoyable to debate with other schools and despite being online we still managed to do fun activities outside the main debates. It was also great for my French comprehension.”

Julia Hall : “It was a great experience, even virtually! I learnt about formal discussions, how to argue different views, even if they are not your own and to listen to the views of different countries. I hope we will be able to go to Brussels!”

Giacomo Serpetti : -Although the MUN has been more challenging to follow online, it has been a great experience to negotiate and discuss issues which afflict the world today with students from across Europe. It opens your mind on the world and the dynamics of power between countries with different interests.”
